Cover Letter Guide
Cover Letter Guide

The covering letter is your means of self-introduction. It is a chance to capture the attention of the reader within a very small window of opportunity and demonstrate the qualities that set you apart from other candidates. They are basically the first impression and an advertisement for your resume. Your cover letter must grab the reader's attention and make them want to read on.

Your cover letter should:

  • Complement your resume by highlighting the most relevant aspects relating to the position. Tailor your cover letter to fit each individual role/application.
  • Keep to one well spaced A4 page in length.
  • Make sure that within the layout you identify the position, commence the letter with an introduction and close with a conclusion.
  • Include your full name, address and contact details. Also find out the details of the contact person in the organisation and address your letter accordingly.
  • Be sure to make your letter clear and concise. Use strong verbs, which demonstrate your attributes, achievements and any skills you could bring to the company that satisfy the requirements of that position as advertised.
  • Mention your reasons for applying which should always be positive. Flexibility in location and salary can also be explained where required.
  • Remember to always proof read.
